February 27, 2024

NFD Local 830 Firefighters responded to 9-11 Park Street at 00:45hrs on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024 for an apartment fire.

A kitchen fire was reported in the 68-unit heavily occupied four story apartment building. Residents were evacuating as Engine 4, Engine 3, Engine 2 (RIT), Truck 2, Truck 1, Rescue 2 and Car 2 (Shift Commander) arrived on scene. Engine Co. 4 was met with heavy smoke in the hallway/lobby and located an apartment fire on the first floor as additional companies encountered a moderate smoke condition on upper floors which resulted in an immediate request for a 2nd and 3rd alarm dispatching Engine 1 and Engine 5 to the fire scene.

Due to the manpower and labor intensive operation of searching numerous apartments on multiple floors, in addition to encountering and assisting multiple non-ambulatory residents, all 33 on-duty Norwalk Professional Firefighters operated on scene of the 3rd alarm fire with five Engine Companies, two Ladder Companies, a Rescue Company and command staff. A number of occupants were treated on-scene for smoke inhalation by Norwalk EMS. All residents with the exception of the occupant of the original fire apartment whom is receiving assistance from the Red Cross were able to re-occupy the building. The fire was confined to the apartment of origin and is being investigated by the Norwalk Fire Marshal’s Office.

In-Station coverage during the fire was provided by The City of Stamford Professional Firefighters 786, Town of New Canaan Professional Firefighters 3224, Town of Westport Professional Firefighters 1081 and the Rowayton Fire Department.
