Local 830 City of Norwalk Fire Department members responded to a 2nd alarm structure fire on Monday, December 16, 2024 at 7:21 pm.
The fire was located at 238 Silvermine Ave. in a 2.5 story residential home. Initial reports stated the house was on fire and that the home was being evacuated.
Upon arrival, first due companies encountered heavy smoke coming from the eaves with fire venting from a side entrance. The fire originated in the basement and had started to extend to the first floor. Due to the size and age of the building, combined with both the fire and smoke conditions, a 2nd alarm was transmitted shortly after arrival. While the fire was contained to the basement and 1st floor, the remainder of the residence suffered significant smoke and heat damage. A total of 3 handlines were stretched all while the building was being both searched and ventilated. The fire was extinguished in 45 minutes by a 2nd alarm assignment consisting of 4 Engines, 2 Ladder Trucks, 1 Heavy Rescue, and a Command Car totaling 29 personnel Norwalk Professional Firefighters.
Currently, there are 2 occupants displaced. There were no injuries reported to either the occupants or the firefighters. Due to the condition of the home, it’s been deemed unfit for occupancy. Norwalk Fire Marshals Division is investigating the cause of the fire.
