At 00:16hrs on Thursday, January 16th. City of Norwalk Professional Firefighters responded to a residential structure fire at 17 Dairy Farm Rd.
Multiple NFD Companies were already out operating at other incidents and were able to quickly reroute to the fire scene. While en-route, additional reports were being relayed by Norwalk Combined 911 Dispatch to responding NFD companies that residents were actively attempting to extinguish a basement fire and rescue the family dog.
NFD Local 830 Firefighters arrived and encountered heavy fire conditions in the basement level extending up the stairs into the upper floor living area. Norwalk Professional Firefighters simultaneously stretched a hoseline to attack the fire while also performing searches of the structure and locating the missing dog.
The fire was quickly brought under control with extensive fire and smoke damage throughout the entire dwelling.
Unfortunately, despite the initial attempted rescue efforts by the homeowner and the quick removal of the K9 outside by NFD Members to awaiting Norwalk Hospital EMS. Attempts to revive the dog on-scene were unsuccessful prior to transport to a local animal hospital.
The occupants did sustain minor injuries which were considered non-life threatening. No injuries to any firefighters were reported.
Due to multiple companies being at other indents during the time of this alarm. A 2nd Alarm equivalent assignment consisting of four Engine Companies, two Ladder Companies, a Rescue Company and the Shift Commander with a total of 30 NFD Local 830 Firefighters operated on scene.
The dwelling has been posted unfit for occupancy, two occupants have been displaced as a result. The Norwalk Fire Marshal’s Division is investigating the cause of the fire.
During the incident, the last remaining NFD Engine Company covered the City of Norwalk along with mutual aid station coverage which was provided by the Town of New Canaan FD Local 3224 and the Town of Westport FD Local 1081. |
