NFD Stretched Thin While Operating at Simultaneous Fires on Easter Sunday.

At 2:51 pm on a Sunday, April 20th. The City of Norwalk Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire at 15 Lockwood Ln with Norwalk Combined 911 Dispatch receiving reports of a fire inside the house with the occupant trying to get back inside.
First arriving NFD companies encountered heavy smoke showing from a two story wood frame private dwelling. Engine Co. 4 located the fire in the rear of first floor and kitchen area with fire conditions beginning to extend up to the 2nd floor.
NFD firefighters from Engine Co. 4 and Engine Co. 2 stretched two attack lines to control and extinguish the fire. While Firefighters from Rescue Co. 2, Truck Co. 2, and Truck Co. 1 conducted primary searches of all floors as well as preformed horizontal ventilation. Both primary and secondary searches were negative. The fire was able to be controlled using a 1st alarm assignment consisting of 3 Engine Companies, 2 Truck Companies, the Heavy Rescue Company and Shift Commander with a total of 26 Norwalk Professional firefighters.
The home suffered severe fire, smoke, and heat damage throughout. One displaced occupant is receiving assistance from the Red Cross. Several birds unfortunately perished in the fire. There were no reported injuries. The Norwalk Fire Marshal’s Division is investigating the cause of the fire.
While this incident was occurring, the last two available NFD companies that were covering the City. Engine Co. 1 & Engine Co. 5, responded to numerous calls for service. Including a multi-vehicle accident, EMS runs and a large area brush fire.
While numerous NFD companies were operating on Lockwood Ln. Engine Co. 1 was dispatched to the area of Flax Hill Park at 3:04pm for a possible brush fire. Engine Co.1 arrived to find a rapidly spreading brush fire in the wooded area behind the park between Norton Pl and Hollow Tree Rd. Engine Co. 5 was requested to the scene to assist with establishing a water supply and both the manpower and labor intensive process of stretching multiple hose lines significant distances through the walking trails from Norton Pl and Hollow Tree Ln to begin controlling and extinguishing the fire.
With all 34 On-Duty Norwalk Professional Firefighters committed at simultaneous significant incidents on both ends of the City. Mutual Aid from the Town of New Canaan FD and the Town of Westport FD was requested for station coverage, while NFD Engine Co. 3 and NFD Car 3 (Assistant Chief of Ops) were able to free up from the scene of the house fire on Lockwood Ln and respond across the City to assist with fire suppression and water supply operations at the scene of the brush fire. The fire was ultimately contained to about an acre of land and extinguished. The Norwalk Fire Marshals Division is also investigating the cause of this fire.
