NFD Firefighters save historic buildings in East Norwalk.

NFD Local 830 Firefighters responded to a building fire on Sunday, May 19th, 2024 at 10:10 am. 
 
The fire was located at 211 Liberty Square in a 2 story mixed occupancy. The first floor was a Mexican restaurant with apartments on the 2nd floor. The row of buildings at Liberty Sq are considered historical landmarks in the City of Norwalk. The buildings were previously occupied by numerous other businesses over the years dating back to when they were constructed during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

While NFD Companies were responding, Norwalk Combined Dispatch was receiving multiple 911 calls reported smoke coming from the roof of the occupancy.
 
Upon arrival, Engine Co. 3 reported heavy smoke coming from the roof, with flames coming out the top of a large kitchen exhaust system.  The fire, located in the kitchen exhaust system, had extended into the floors and walls of the 2nd floor. After extensive overhaul, the fire was extinguished in 60 minutes by a 2nd alarm assignment consisting of 4 Engines Companies, 2 Truck Companies, 1 Rescue Company, and the Deputy Chief (Shift Commander) totaling 29 Norwalk Professional Firefighters.
 
There are currently 2 occupants displaced by the fire. The restaurant/2nd floor apartment sustained moderate damage. There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians. The Norwalk Fire Marshal Division is investigating the cause of the fire.

During this incident the last remaining NFD Engine Company (E1) with 4 Norwalk Professional Firefighters covered the city with additional Mutual Aid from the Town of New Canaan and Town of Westport Providing in Station Coverage.
