Multi Alarm Building Fire on Main Ave

At 11:45hrs on Sunday April 2nd, Norwalk Professional Firefighters responded to a reported building fire at 296 Main Ave in Station 1's first due response area.

Engines Co.'s 1, 4, 2 (RIT), Truck Co.'s. 1, 2, Rescue Co. 2 and Car 2 (Shift Commander) responded on the initial assignment.

Upon arrival of Car 2 under the command of Deputy Chief Shay transmitted a 2nd alarm due to fire showing from two units of the apartment complex which added Engine Co. 3 on the assignment. A subsequent 3rd was alarm was transmitted to add Engine Co. 5 to the scene with brought all 33 on duty Norwalk Professional Firefighters to the scene along with mutual aid to cover the city and a Stamford Truck Co. for RIT.

Engine Co. 1 quickly deployed multiple handlines to begin fire suppression with other NFD companies. In total, 3 handlines, including 1 operated off of the bucket of Truck Co.1 to extinguish extension to the roof were used. Due to the aggressive interior attack preformed by Local 830 members on well advanced fire conditions. The fire was held primarily to two units which were deemed unfit for occupancy with smoke and water damage to the units below and damage to the roof area. NFD members also rescued and removed a number of small pets.
No injuries were reported and a total of 10 occupants were displaced, the Red Cross was on scene to provide housing and assistance.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Norwalk FD Fire Marshalls Office.
