August 24, 2026

City of Norwalk Fire Department Marine Unit 229 responded to a distressed kayaker whose paddle had broken, leaving him unable to control the kayak in the strong tidal current on the Long Island Sound. The kayaker was also without a life vest. Marine Unit 229 quickly located the kayaker and safely brought them back to shore.

Marine Unit 229 and Marine Unit 238 are cross-staffed by Engine Co. 3 from Van Zant St Fire Station located in East Norwalk. On weekends during the summer months, Our Marine Unit Operators provide dedicated staffing for Marine Unit 229 to ensure a swift and safe response to any incident on the water in the Norwalk area and allows us to keep Engine Co. 3 in service to provide vital fire suppression and emergency medical services for the "East Side" of the City.

City of Norwalk Professional Firefighters always remain ready to respond whenever we're needed on land or on the water. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
