At 04:07hrs on November 11th, NFD Local 830 Firefighters responded to a house fire at 18 Sasqua rd in “East Norwalk”.
Engine Co. 3 arrived first due and was met with a 3 story 7,000sq foot private dwelling with heavy fire conditions already through the roof.
NFD Firefighters entered the structure to begin an aggressive interior attack but, were hampered by well advanced fire conditions in the attic and numerous water supply issues.
A 2nd, and 3rd alarm was quickly sounded bringing in all 33 On-Duty Norwalk Professional Firefighters to the scene due to numerous low pressure/volume hydrants and water mains in the area which forced firefighters to lay supply lines over 1,000ft. This significant obstacle in addition to well advanced fire conditions, forced firefighters to withdraw from the structure and move to a defensive posture.
A 4th Alarm was sounded which brought in the Westport FD Engine and the City of Stamford FD into the scene with an Engine Co., Truck Co., Deputy Chief and their “Tanker Task Force” was requested to establish a positive water supply by utilizing multiple Tankers from both CT & NY fire departments.
It took approximately an hour to knock down the bulk of the fire after multiple master streams went into operation.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Norwalk Fire Marshals Division.
