January 3, 2025

City of Norwalk Local 830 Firefighters responded to a structure fire on Friday, January 3rd, 2025 at approximately 2:34 am.

The fire was located at the 351 Westport Ave. in a 1 story, multi-unit motel. Multiple 911 calls stated there was smoke coming from the roof with flames visible from an apartment at the “Garden Park Motel”.

Engine Company 4, located about half a mile down Westport Ave quickly arrived on scene and encountered heavy smoke coming from the entire ridgeline of the 12-unit wing of the motel with fire starting to vent out of the end unit.  A working fire was declared and a 2nd alarm was immediately transmitted bringing an additional Engine Company into the scene.  As the attack line was being stretched to the fire apartment, primary and secondary searches were conducted of the remaining 11 units.  All searches were negative. An aggressive fire attack by the first due engine combined with quick horizontal and vertical ventilation resulted in the fire being contained to the unit of origin.  There would be no lateral extension throughout the common attic.

The fire was extinguished in 45 minutes by a 2nd alarm assignment consisting of 4 Engines Company’s, 2 Ladder Company’s , 1 Rescue Company , and the shift commander totaling 30 Norwalk professional Firefighters.

There were 2 residents who have been relocated to two empty non-impacted units on the premises.  There were no injuries reported.  The Norwalk Fire Marshal Division is investigating the cause of the fire.

During this incident the last remaining NFD Engine Company staffed with 4 NFD Local 830 members along with mutual aid station coverage provided by the Town of New Canaan FD Local 3224 and Town of Westport FD Local 1081 covered the City of Norwalk.
