At 03:55hrs on January 28th, City of Norwalk Professional Firefighters responded on the automatic mutual aid assignment to assist the Rowayton Volunteer Fire Dept for a reported structural fire at 1 Cudlipp Street in the Rowayton section of Norwalk.
NFD Engine Co. 5 was the first to arrive along with RVFD Car 1 and NFD Car 2 (Shift Commander) to find smoke showing from a single-family residence under renovation/construction. NFD Engine 5 stretched a hose-line into the structure and held the fire to the area of origin as NFD Truck 2 performed primary searches and ventilation. Extensive smoke damage was limited to the new addition due to plastic sheeting in place during the on-going construction project. This barrier enabled the residents to re-occupy the dwelling after the fire.
Luckily, all occupant’s which included an adult and four children under the age of six were safely able to evacuate the structure after their smoke detectors alerted them to the fire on the first floor.
22 Norwalk Professional Firefighters with 3 Engine Companies, 2 Truck Companies, and the Shift Commander operated on scene alongside the RVFD Command Unit, 1 RVFD Engine and 6 Rowayton Volunteer Firefighters.
No injuries were reported on scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Rowayton Fire Marshal.
NFD Local 830 would like to remind all residents and business owners to ensure that they have properly installed and functioning smoke detectors.
The outcome of this fire could have been very different, with the increased possibility of fatalities due to the this incident occurring during the overnight hours if the occupants hadn’t been alerted to the fire by their smoke detectors. This gave the occupants precious time to safely evacuate the structure and prompt notification to both fire departments which allowed for a quick response and limited fire damage.
During this incident 2 Engine Companies and a Heavy Rescue Company with 12 NFD Local 830 Firefighters covered the City of Norwalk.
