Norwalk Professional Firefighters attended the 2025 International Association of Firefighters Legislative conference in Washington D.C. this past week.
NFD Local 830 members, along with delegates from locals throughout the state of CT and our UPFFA, were well represented at this event which has been a cornerstone of the IAFF’s legislative efforts for our fellow firefighters. Over the years, the IAFF has won many significant victories – from creating a national firefighter cancer registry, establishing the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program that promotes safe fire ground staffing, ensuring the first responders of 9/11 receive the health care they deserve, to defeating legislation designed to undermine our members’ defined benefit pensions .
This year, NFD Local 830 members had the opportunity to sit down with senators and other representatives from both political parties to discuss key issues impacting firefighters’ jobs, health, safety, and economic security. Such as expanding the Federal Public Safety Officers' Benefits to include job related cancer which is now the number one killer of firefighters, developing PFAS free Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and protecting members right to free speech. Just to name a few.
